Durian season is a time where all durian lovers can satisfy their taste buds. It’s when stocks are the freshest and tastiest. Unfortunately, durian season only occurs between June to September, which means you only have a couple of weeks left to feast on the king of fruits!
But what happens when your cravings are triggered after durian season ends?
As any durian lover knows, no other dish or fruit can match the unrivalled taste and texture of the king of fruits. And yet, no one wants to wait a few months just for the season to begin again. So how should durian lovers in Singapore get their fix when the fruits are not in season?
While durian season only takes place for a couple of months each year, there are some ways you can continue to satisfy your cravings even when they are not in season.
The clock is ticking. Make sure you follow these tips so that you can get your durian fix during the offseason this 2020.
1. Give Frozen Durians a Try
Yes, frozen durians are a thing. They might not be as popular as fresh ones for obvious reasons, but they can last a lot longer than the latter.
Like other packaged frozen foods, frozen durians can last for the long term because the freezing temperature extinguishes the bacteria responsible for causing food to go bad. Freezing temperatures also prevent decay by slowing down the action of enzymes in them.
While fresh durians can last for a week or so in the refrigerator, most frozen durians can last for as long as a month or even longer! You could enjoy them while they are still frozen or defrost them before wolfing them down.
Alternatively, you could also incorporate them into durian desserts like durian layered cake or durian sticky rice. Just make sure they are thawed before cooking with them. If you are a business owner, you could consider buying frozen durians in bulk so that you can produce durian desserts all year round. Do note, however, that storage time for frozen durian differs from brand to brand. Just for reference, our frozen selections can last for 3 months if kept in the freezer.
2. Used Processed Durian Products
Before you click away, hear us out first.
All durian lovers can agree that these gems taste a lot better fresh than processed. However, during the offseason, processed durian products might be the next best thing after frozen durians.
One advantage of processed durians is that they are a lot easier to work with when making durian desserts like durian pengat or panna cotta. For instance, you could use frozen durian puree instead of frozen durians to save yourself the hassle of mashing them up by hand.
When looking for processed durian supplies, however, make sure you avoid artificial flavours. Instead, look out for durian purees and pastes that are made with real durians.
3. Plan Ahead
Behind every good purchase, commercial or personal, is solid planning. While it might seem tempting to buy all the frozen and processed durians in bulk before the season is over, you definitely want to make wise purchasing decisions whether you are a business owner or just a fellow durian lover.
After all, you would not want to end up spending a fortune on frozen durians, only for them to spoil within a few months because you did not consume them in time.
If you are buying-to-keep your purchases for future use, here are some questions you could ponder over:
- How do you intend to use the durians? Do you intend to enjoy them as they are or use them for dishes?
- What types of durian do you prefer?
- How often do you think you would crave for durians?
Here’s a tip: you could also engage with your durian supplier and inform him of your preferences and concerns. Durian suppliers are probably going to be a lot more knowledgeable about the fruit than an average person. So, inquire and let them advise you.
