5 Yummy Ways to Use Durian Puree

5 Yummy Ways to Use Durian Puree

With durian season over, how are durian lovers going to get their fix of the unbeatable King of Fruits?

Luckily for you, there’s an easily accessible source of durian available all year round that’s just as good as the fresh fruit — durian puree!

So put on your apron and head into the kitchen as we share five durian treats you can make at home using durian puree!

1. Durian Pancake

A popular dessert or snack across Southeast Asia, durian pancakes are soft, pillowy durian delights. They are sometimes known as durian crepes and are usually filled with a mix of whipped cream and durian. Of course, if you make it yourself at home, you can up the indulgence by packing them full with pure durian paste!

Try this recipe by What to Cook Today for a light, creamy snack. If you’re feeling lazy, pancakes made using instant pancake mix topped with durian puree also works in a pinch!

2. Durian Muffins

Ever bit into a decadent chocolate muffin, only to discover an ooey, gooey, rich molten surprise in the centre? Nothing’s stopping you from doing the same thing with durian! Simply follow a recipe for durian muffins, and spoon in a dollop of durian puree as you’re filling up your muffin tin with batter. Don’t forget to add some durian puree into the batter too, for a durian-filled extravaganza.

3. Durian Basque Burnt Cheesecake

Basque burnt cheesecakes have been all the rage in recent years, so why not try a durian version of it? The aromatic durian pairs perfectly with the slightly tangy cream cheese and the toastiness of the burnt top.

Plus, it’s surprisingly easy to make! Just pop your durian puree, cream cheese, sugar, eggs, cornstarch and cream into a blender and whizz it all up. Then, pour it into a cake tin lined with parchment paper, place it into the oven and voila! Creamy goodness with a durian kick. Here’s a recipe for irresistible durian burnt cheesecake for when you crave it.

4. Durian Smoothie

Two ingredients. One blender. A delicious drink you simply won’t get enough of.

It takes mere seconds to whip up this beverage that would go rather nicely with a plate of fresh durian! All you need to do is blend the durian paste with some yoghurt or fresh milk for a quick pick-me-up or breakfast smoothie. Transform it from a smoothie into a milkshake by swapping out the milk for vanilla ice cream instead to create a more indulgent version.

Or, try making the popular Vietnamese Durian Shake called sinh tố sầu riêng, which locals commonly enjoy as a way to beat the summer heat!

5. Durian Popsicle

No ice cream maker at home? Don’t worry. Durian popsicles are the way to go! You’ve most likely seen those plastic popsicle or ice lolly moulds before, which can be easily found at supermarkets, shops like Daiso, or online. Pour durian paste into the moulds, freeze them overnight and just like that, you have your very own homemade durian popsicle.

With those same moulds, you could even have a go at making traditional durian potong. Nothing beats a refreshing iced durian dessert on a hot Singapore afternoon!
